RUNE KONGSHAUG, B.SC, M.ARCH
President & Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO)
Passionate architect, world traveller, bon vivant.
In the beginning, Rune was creating complex risk management models in financial and real estate services where he found himself longing for the simpler things experienced in his native Norway – the sky, sea and the land.
He started his formal architectural training at McGill University where he co-managed “Making of the Edible Landscape”, an international research project with partners in Rosario, Colombo, and Kampala. The goal was to incorporate informal practices to bring the principles of good farming directly too less affluent urban neighbourhoods.
The integration of architecture, urban agriculture, and community resiliency resonated with him on a profound level. He recognized that architecture, like science, includes an analytical approach to problem solving, and in our urban landscape we can integrate technology to deliver beautiful solutions that bring us closer to nature, efficiently and effectively.
The “productive house” concept was launched at UN Habitat WUF, following with the groundbreaking and completion of Produktif - design studio and think-tank, a LEED® Platinum-certified mixed-use complex in Montreal, Quebec.
Rune brings his unique perspective to each and every project. Today Produktif tackles the urban affordable housing challenge, by building smart modular live / work / play pods designed to support resilient and healthy communities. "Stackable and environmentally sound", Rune and his team seamlessly integrate sustainable practice into design whilst bringing together the very best style to generate warmth in modern architecture. His love of the outdoors - to fish, plant potatoes or enjoy a simple sunrise inspires him to produce more than he consumes.
KAREEN SMITH
Design Ambassador
Beauty and form + function and execution = timeless style.
Not wanting to be constrained by labels, Kareen has excelled in combining art with practical design, always accompanied by playful dash of colour. The essence of designing clothes is bringing concept to reality completing what a drawing could not be – going from 2 dimensional to reality.
Studying Fashion Design at Parson’s – her first stint in the NYC garment industry focused on designing and coordinating production. Ever the free spirit, becoming a freelance stylist prompted her to launch her own line incorporating sustainable materials. Inspired by the diversity of NYC, Kareen’s gives her clients the ability to express themselves through the clothes they wear. Her goal is to help wearers feel the connection between what they wear and how they feel, using shape, texture and layers as the mediums for expressing mood.
“I believe the clothes I make can be worn by anyone. Anyone, any race, any age can wear a piece from my collections.” Stylish and sexy, Kareen has a loyal client base and her line Kostome is know for it’s hand tailored, natural fiber, intimate aesthetic, limited edition clothing.
Joining Rune at the MpH project in Montreal, she found a new calling – growing, cultivating and caring for greenhouse to table items, responsible for operations of the 4-season greenhouse and inspiring students, interns, friends and family to explore foodscapes, developing a bakery club with a focus on artisanal pizza.
Not wanting to be limited by fashion, Kareen leads the design team for signature exterior, interior and urban garden designs, using her love and passion for fashion and styling to bring a new dimension to interior design and comfort. Naturally.
